It's Not Murphy's Law - That's Mercury Retrograde!
We’ve all heard and uttered the exasperated sigh of “must be Mercury retrograde!” when it seems Murphy has decided to pay us a visit. But what exactly does planetary orbit, and specifically Mercury retrograde, have to do with feeling like everything that can go wrong has done so in a glorious kind of way?
Well my friends, Mercury retrograde happens three to four times a year and lasts for approximately three weeks. We are currently in a Mercury retrograde phase that will continue from May 29th until June 22nd. During this time it appears that Mercury is moving in the opposite direction as Earth. Planets move from east to west, but during retrograde they appear to be moving from west to east. Let’s be real though, this is a quite deceptive name, since the planet doesn’t actually move backward in orbit, but instead is creating an optical illusion from Earth’s perspective. Think of it this way, when you’re driving down the highway at 70mph and you pass the car next to you who is obviously on their Sunday drive at 45mph, they appear to be moving backwards. This happens with Mercury because her orbit only takes 88 days compared to earth’s 365 days. In reality, that little bugger is simply speeding past us at such a high rate that she appears to be moving backward from our perspective. Maybe you’re still asking yourself, “but what does that have to do with us mere earthlings?” Well, to that I say, “As above, so below.”
There is an inherent relationship between the orbits in the heavens and human activity down here on Earth. The Moon and its relationship with the tides is a prime example. In the case of Mercury retrograde, as Mercury hurtles past Earth it creates the optical illusion that it’s moving backwards...this rush creates turbulent winds, like a train speeding past us while we stand still might do on our terrestrial plane. This means that during Mercury’s magic trick there remains the potential for disruptions in multiple spheres. Mercury rules communication, travel, technology, and clear thinking. As such, it is incredibly important to understand that miscommunications abound, but planning and preparation go a long way. If you find yourself struggling to avoid these situations during Mercury retrograde, try summarizing what you think the other person said to you. Take the time to brainstorm every possible scenario, and its solution, in broader terms. Fixating on the piddly details will only bog you down and cloud your path through. Be sure to stay updated regarding any travel arrangements you’ve made while staying flexible when things don’t go as planned. Backup all data on your electronics, and make sure to have a hard copy of any important presentation material available. If you must sign legal documents, or make important life decisions during retrograde, be sure to do so with careful thought and thorough attention to detail. The important thing to remember is that a little forethought goes a long way.
Though, I don’t want you worrying that Mercury retrograde is all bad. This time allows us the chance to stop, look, listen, and redirect our energies more productively. It can also provide closure regarding past situations. So my friends, during this three week period allow yourself an opportunity to be thorough and perfect your approach. It’s time to slow down, reevaluate, and focus on communicating clearly and effectively. Perhaps it’s time to reconnect with old pals and relatives. Revisit persistent issues from the past and use this “slow ‘er down” energy to resolve what plagues you. Concentrate on correcting or advancing previously established relationships during this three week timeframe.
There are many benefits to Mercury retrograde. This period has the potential to be rich with creativity and renewed connections, especially when approached with positivity, clear intentions, and flexibility. Be sure to remain adaptable, don’t rush yourself through important decisions, and don’t rely solely on technology during this time. In fact, if possible, it is a fantastic time to consider a digital detox. Removing the stresses of extraneous technology can help keep focus on effective and concise communication, which is precisely what is needed during Mercury retrograde. Overall, just remember to give yourself the space to accept the challenges that will likely arise, and enjoy the time of reflection the cosmos is offering you, my friend.
